Review: Wendy’s Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger

Hey everybody! Sorry for the lack of posts recently, it was a crazy finals week. Anyways, on my drive back home from the university I stopped by Wendy’s and spotted this little gem: the Wendy’s Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger, alongside a Spicy Chipotle Chicken Sandwich. The little chipotle burger features a junior beef patty, pepper jack cheese, chipotle sauce, and jalapeno slices on a standard seedless bun. Both the cheeseburger and chicken sandwich were available for $.99. Both are available at my local Wendy’s for a limited time.

The Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger was a bit bready for my liking, but that’s to be expected in a value sandwich. The patty looked absolutely puny compared to the bun, although I don’t hate Wendy’s Jr. patties. Actually one of my most frequented sandwiches there is the Jr. Deluxe Cheeseburger. The amount of bread made it difficult at times to taste much in the burger, but here’s what a I got from it…

The pepper jack cheese didn’t look like any pepper jack cheese I’ve ever seen. It lacked in any kind of green or red pigmentation. The chipotle sauce was definitely the highlight of the sandwich. The sauce was quite bold and zesty, perhaps one of the better chipotle sauces I’ve had at a fast food restaurant. My complaint about it was the very small amount that was applied and the fact that there was relatively little spice to it. One thing Wendy’s has never gotten right before is spicy food, but give them enough time and I’m sure they will come around

So that leaves us with the jalapenos. These were definitely the only spicy thing on the entire sandwich, but as far as jalapeno’s go, they were quite tame. The heat ceiling of this sandwich was determined by the jalapeno slices. Even though they weren’t very spicy, I did enjoy the crunch and flavor they lent to the sandwich. Although the jalapeno’s were the dominant flavor of the sandwich, the rest of the ingredients still held up fairly well. With the junior patty, however, you might be wishing for more beef. More chipotle sauce and more beef would have made this thing quite amazing, but it was a decent little sandwich in its own right.

Wendy’s Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger is a value menu burger that offers a mildly spicy offering to budget fast food consumers. The chipotle cheeseburger gets its small amount of spice from a combination of chipotle sauce, jalapeno slices, and pepper jack cheese. The chipotle sauce was tasty, but sparse and not spicy. The jalapeno slices overpowered much of the burger, but I enjoyed the crunch and slight spice they provided. Overall the Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger is a decent budget sandwich with a tasty sauce. Next time I order this, I will be asking for more chipotle sauce.

The Score

Taste: 7/10
Presentation: 6/10

What I liked: Chipotle sauce, jalapeno slices, decent taste given the price
What I didn’t like: Not enough chipotle sauce, the jalapenos were the dominant flavor, needed more beef (it’s a junior patty, what do you expect?)

  1. I just had the chipotle chicken sammich – it was great. Maybe I just got lucky, but the chicken was much thicker than normally seen in 99cent breaded chicken sandwiches. Also, it had plenty of sauce. It was literally the best and most filling 99 cent sandwich I’ve ever had, and I’m so going back for another.
