Review: Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco

Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos TacosAlright, so there’s a lot of hype about Taco Bell’s Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. It has been reported that Taco Bell has been pushing the Cool Ranch Tacos with their most expensive ad campaign ever. After the great success of the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco, Taco Bell is hoping to smash records with the latest Cool Ranch Taco. So what is a Doritos Locos Taco? They basically take your standard Taco Bell taco and swap the normal taco shell for a taco shell made out of Doritos. I picked up a Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco for $1.39 and the supreme version for $1.69.

How Does it Taste?

So I ended up purchasing both varieties of the Cool Ranch tacos to see which one worked better with the Cool Ranch flavor. I started with the supreme version. Both of the tacos came in a wrapped, cardboard Doritos Locos Tacos holder rather than just the standard Taco Bell wrapper (hooray for twice the waste products!).

Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos

The Cool Ranch tacos definitely smelled like a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. The seasoning was all over the damn thing. Upon further inspection, it is clear that the taco shell only possesses seasoning on the outside part of the shell – the inside is void of any seasoning.

The Supreme Cool Ranch Taco tasted like your standard Taco Bell taco supreme, but with a strong punch of salt on your tongue with every bite, since the Taco Shell hits the tongue first. Unfortunately, the Cool Ranch flavors are too light compared to the rest of the taco to be more than barely noticeable. The seasoned beef in the taco overwhelms any Cool Ranch flavor that was present in the taco shell.

Next up was the standard Cool Ranch taco. I figured this version would combine better with the seasoned taco shell. Well it turns out I was right, but the Cool Ranch seasoning was still hiding behind the flavor of the seasoned beef. I was surprised that I could pick up small amounts of the Cool Ranch flavor in this taco, but, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to change my mind about these tacos.

The Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos came as a huge disappointment to me. What is the point of having a fancy taco shell made out of Cool Ranch Doritos if the flavor is so easily masked? All that these taco shells really added for me was a kick of salt with every bite. The Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco is definitely the better of the two. Due to how inexpensive they are, I’d suggest at least giving one taco a try. Too bad they don’t live up to the massive hype created by Taco Bell.

The Score

Taste: 6.5/10
Presentation: 8/10

Pros: Taco Bell tacos are good and cheap, smell of Cool Ranch Doritos
Cons: Taco shell adds mostly salt to the taco, excessive hype

  1. Thank you for this review! I did try both the regular and supreme tacos and you are absolutely right. I am a huge fan of the regular nacho cheese locos tacos, but these failed to deliver the same eating sensation. In fact, after trying the first bite and having my wife try a bite too just to make sure I wasn’t crazy, we both agreed that these tacos taste like cheap Safeway egg rolls. I think they should do the Salsa Verde flavor if they continue to attempt the Doritos collaboration.

    • Thanks! I loved the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos too. And I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Salsa Verde DLT…

  2. So disappointed. I love cool ranch doritos CHIPS but this taco had the weirdest hint of a spice I couldn’t pinpoint, and I couldn’t get past it. I will stick with the nacho cheese flavored shells. Do you think they’ll ever create a taco flavored shell like the taco flavored Doritos?

  3. Its crap like their rest of their food. Salad dishes with a straw full of meat in each.
You notice none of the pictures of the taco here does not show what little meat is in them like the rest of their foods. Its a shame Taco bell has to keep coming out with with new foods to keep customers when all they have to do it actually put at least half the meat they show on their adverts.
    Buy a bag of Doritios.

  4. Hi, Neat post. There is a problem together with your site in internet explorer,
