Review: Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin

It’s finally fall, and you know what that means: Pumpkin Season is here! And that also means the return of one of my favorite bakery items from Starbucks: The Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin. This pumpkin muffin is coated on the top with candied pumpkin seeds and features a cream cheese filling center. These muffins are only available in the fall.

*disclaimer* I might be a bit biased in this review because Pumpkin Season (and the holidays) is pretty much my favorite time of year. If you aren’t a pumpkin fanatic like I am, you might not enjoy this muffin as much as I did.

The Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin has been a long-time favorite of mine, but like all things at Starbucks, the price is a bit steep for what you get, which is why I don’t really frequent Starbucks.

Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin

The Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin is about the size of a muffin that you’d bake at home using a 12 cup muffin baking tin. The muffin is served to the customer in a small paper sack (featuring the La Boulange logo now). The sack that my muffin was served in was pink in color, which didn’t make me feel all that manly, but who could possibly care when you are about to enjoy a muffin as delicious as this?

The outside of the muffin is coated with a few candied pumpkin seeds, which add a slight amount of crunch, but not much in the way of flavor. These are also probably the source of 99% of the nutrition in the muffin, seeing as it’s mostly made with sugar and unbleached flour. The muffin top is nice and all, but what you’re really after with this muffin is the cream cheese center.

The pumpkin muffin itself is perfectly moist and features a nice balance of pumpkin, sweetness, and spices, but the key to fully enjoying this muffin is to try and get a bit of cream cheese filling with each bite. The richness of the cream cheese transforms the delicious pumpkin muffin into the most sinful of sinfully delectable pumpkin pastries.

I can’t overstate how much I love these muffins, and I could only wish that they were healthy for you so I could have another excuse to enjoy them. They might be a little steep in price, but I have never regretted a purchase of one of these muffins.

Pros: Perfectly moist pumpkin muffin, nice balance of pumpkin and cream cheese, pumpkin season
Cons: Very high in sugar, seems like a healthier choice (but it isn’t), only available during the fall

I used to adore these and be completely addicted, but I’ve been a little hesitant this year since I know they changed their recipe (I’m not sure how they changed it, what they added or took away, but it’s less calories. Maybe by change the recipe they just mean size, since it seems a lot smaller). Did you try it last year as well? If you did, was the taste similar?

    • I can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in taste or size, but maybe they did it gradually? Like refining the recipe little-by-little over a few years. I guess it wouldn’t be too bad if they shrank in size recently… 420 calories is plenty for a snack like this!
