Review: Starbucks Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino

Starbucks has added a new Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino to their line of Frappuccino beverages. The new frozen coffee beverage is made by blending coffee with four kinds of caramel, milk and ice. The drink is topped with a layer of dark caramel sauce, whipped cream, caramel drizzle and crunchy sugar topping. I purchased a tall order of one of the new beverages during Happy Hour, and the price ended up a little over $2.00.

How Does it Taste?

The first thing that I noticed about the drink is that even though all of the promo pictures show a coffee-colored drink, my drink was milk white. At first I thought nothing of it, but then I took a sip of the drink. Turns out that the thing contained barely any ice at all. The drink was almost the consistency of a runny milkshake rather than what a Frappuccino should be. I’m pretty sure they just screwed up my drink bad, but it was definitely not a normal Frappuccino. The funny thing is, even though the drink wasn’t frozen, it still contained huge chunks of ice that kept getting caught in the straw every 2 seconds. Why is it that I can never be served a Frappuccino that I can sip happily without pieces of ice clogging the straw?

The Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino has a strong, buttery kind of caramel taste that doesn’t let up throughout the lifetime of the beverage. I’m not much of a fan of caramel, so the new drink was way too much for me. The caramel flavor of this beverage is rivaled only by finding a bottle of caramel syrup and chugging it.

On top of the intense caramel flavor, the drink was also incredibly sweet. I checked out the nutrition facts of a few other Frappuccinos, and the Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino appears to have the highest sugar content of them all. And I’m not talking by a little, I’m talking an extra 1/3 helping of sugar. A grande Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino has 69g of sugar while the new Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino contains 93g of sugar in the same size. Yikes!

In an attempt to find something redeeming about this drink, I did like the buttery flavor, but it was just far too strong. I’d imagine only the most hardcore of caramel lovers will truly enjoy this drink.

Giant chunk of ice in my drink

The Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino was far too sweet and far too caramely. The amount of caramel this thing showcases is a bit much. Perhaps I just don’t get it because I never was a fan of the Caramel Frappuccino, but this drink was pretty bad. My drink was not blended properly and it resembled a melted milkshake more than a frozen beverage. Overall this thing was a gigantic failure and a waste of calories and sugar intake.

The Score

Taste: 3/10
Presentation: 8.5/10

Pros: The drink was pretty
Cons: Ungodly sweet, takes caramel flavor to the extreme, wasn’t frozen, couldn’t taste any coffee

  1. Wow did you not have a frap!! Lol it’s almost not even applicable! I also ordered one soon after it came out and it looked like the picture. But you didn’t have a caramel ribbon frap at all! Lol anyway it’s a funny review that I laughed at but you totally didn’t have a frap!

    • Yeah the guy that made mine must have been new or something… It’s like they forgot to blend it, lol.

  2. I just tried the Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino and it was pretty good. The coffee taste was a bit strong for me, and it wasn’t enough caramel for me and it was blended just right. Joe’s Mugg caramel frap still tastes a lot better.

  3. What you got was a Caramel Ribbon Crunch Creme Frappuccino – or one without coffee. So basically you got a Vanilla Bean with caramel. Your barista must have misheard you.
