Review: McDonald’s Mighty Wings

Well it looks like McDonald’s is advancing into bone-in chicken territory with the new Mighty Wings. The Mighty Wings are advertised as “spicy, bold, delicious” chicken wings which are clearly aimed at pleasing the palate of the football season. I purchased the 5-piece order of Mighty Wings for $5.99, but they also come in 3-piece and 10-piece.

McDonald's Mighty Wings

How Does It Taste?

McDonald’s isn’t the first place I think of when I think of fried chicken. I mean, McDonald’s has the most perfect chicken creation known to man: the Chicken McNugget. Why would I ever order any kind of chicken at McDonald’s other than the McNugget? Well my friends, the Mighty Wings will make me rethink my opinion next time.

The first thing people might notice about the Mighty Wings is the price. $5.99 is a little steep for five chicken wings. I had little interest in ordering these wings due to the price alone, but after eating the wings, I have no regrets.

McDonald's Mighty Wings

I wasn’t really excited when McDonald’s announced they were going to be selling chicken wings, but they ended up surprising the hell out of me. The Mighty Wings have this perfect crispy outer coating that is among the best I’ve ever had on a piece of fried chicken, and no I’m not kidding. I couldn’t believe these wings came out of a McDonald’s. The outer coating was just perfect on all five of the chicken wings, Both on the drumettes and the flats.

The shocking thing (there are many shocking things about these wings, but this is the most shocking to me) is that the wings actually were pretty spicy. McDonald’s did not fool around when they threw the “spicy” label on these. They are on par with the Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder when it came to the heat. It wasn’t apparent at first, but eventually the spicy crept in.

The McAftermath

Not only were these wings spicy and perfectly crispy, but they tasted pretty awesome as well. The spices they used on these wings was just scrumptious. It’s weird saying this, but today McDonald’s served me better pieces of fried chicken than I’ve ever gotten at KFC. Kudos to McDonald’s for creating such a delicious chicken wing. Now if only they weren’t so damn pricy.

McDonald’s Mighty Wings are McDonald’s take on chicken wings. The Mighty Wings contain no sauce, only breading. The wings had a perfectly crisp outer coating that was both spicy and flavorful. The chicken on the inside was juicy and plentiful. The wings were perfect as is and needed no sauce (I attempted using ranch sauce but it tasted really off). If the Mighty Wings weren’t so expensive I’d probably be ordering a lot more of them in the future.

The Score

Taste: 8.5/10
Presentation: 9/10

What I liked: Crispy coating, nice amount of spicy heat, the spices used, good amount of meat on every wing
What I didn’t like: Pretty messy to eat, McDonald’s ranch, feels weird to order something like this from McDonald’s

  1. i agree about the price, especially when you can go to kfc and get a 10 piece for around 7 bucks

  2. I’m kind of a food snob who tried these mighty wings expecting them to be awful. I was pleasantly surprised. I pretty much don’t eat fast food – but I’ll probably make an exception to order these again.

  3. When I first saw these I kinda turned my nose up at the idea of buying wings from a McDonald’s. Whoa was I ever wrong. They are pretty good, though pretty pricey! I would definitely give these another shot.

  4. I really think these are some great fried wings…and I lived in north Philly. Pricey but I don’t buy wings to often anymore (usually bake my own now) but a good sinful splurge!

  5. Pleasantly surprised as well with the amount of spice as well as how filling it was.

  6. Hi Taylor,
If you’re a big fan of fried chicken, why don’t you give Jollibee a try? Jollibee is big fast food restaurant in the Philippines and the competitor of Mc Donald’s. They have what you are looking for in a ” perfect fried chicken” crispy in the outside mouth watering in the inside”.
