McDonald’s has added a new-ish item to their Dollar Menu: the Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken. This sandwich has been available at my local McDonald’s for a while, but apparently it hasn’t been available nationwide. The Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken features a chicken patty nearly identical to the normal McChicken sandwich, but this one has a darker orange color and has a spicy kick to it. The sandwich is topped with lettuce and mayonnaise. I picked up a Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken for $1.00.
How Does it Taste?
The Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken surprised the hell out of me. No it doesn’t have the moistest chicken patty, no the overall quality of the sandwich wasn’t that great. This sandwich was actually spicy. Coming from a restaurant like McDonald’s, this was a huge surprise. It didn’t have me reaching for water, but my tolerance for spicy foods is decent. This sandwich might be too spicy for some folks.
The sandwich had a good flavor to it. The chicken patty was sufficiently moist for a processed piece of chicken. The spicy breading of the spicy McChicken added a satisfying crunch to the sandwich. The chicken had a good flavor to and I could pick up the flavor of black pepper pretty easily.
The lettuce they throw on this sandwich was pretty pathetic. It was an incredibly small amount of some of the crappiest shredded lettuce I’ve ever seen. Strangely though, the small amount of lettuce added a noticeable amount of crunch to the Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken.
I’m all for mayonnaise on my sandwiches, but they put just a tad too much on this sandwich. It was also somewhat concentrated at one spot, so I had to spread it around slightly so I didn’t get one bite of all mayonnaise. It acted as a kind of glue to contain all the sandwich ingredients, and it also helped to cut down on some of the spicy burn that this sandwich had to offer. Overall all the ingredients worked very well together, perhaps better than the regular McChicken sandwich.
The Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken is a great Dollar Menu sandwich that offers a surprising amount of heat. I’m a fan of spicy chicken sandwiches and this sandwich satisfied my spicy chicken craving. Take notes on this, Sonic Spicy Popcorn Chicken, this is what spicy chicken from a fast food joint should be. The chicken may be a processed patty, the lettuce may be lacking, and the mayonnaise might have been in excess, but this sandwich is a pretty good addition to the McDonald’s Dollar Menu. It’s hard to find a lot of bad things to say about a Dollar Menu sandwich since it should be expected that the food will have some flaws at that price point. I would recommend the Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken over the regular McChicken sandwich.
Pros: Delivers a nice amount of heat, chicken had a nice crunch to it, only a buck
Cons: Small amount of scraggly lettuce, a bit too much mayonnaise, perhaps too spicy for some
