McDonald’s released the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Frappe about a month ago in anticipation for Valentine’s Day, and I decided to try this “gem” before it disappeared. The new frappe contains a blend of coffee, chocolate mocha, strawberry syrup, and chocolate chips topped with whipped cream and strawberry drizzle.
Price: $2.99 small
McDonald’s McCafe line is usually hit or miss with me. They have a few drinks that I highly enjoy and order often (like their Vanilla Iced Coffee w/ light syrup) and a few that I would never order again. So knowing that, I went in to try the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Frappe knowing it could end up either brilliantly or disastrous. Unfortunately, this one fell into the disastrous category.
While the drink is quite pretty to look at, that’s about where the fun stops. The first thing I did was sample the strawberry drizzle on top of my drink, which there wasn’t much of. It had to be the most artificial tasting strawberry syrup I have ever had. The only strawberry flavor I’ve had that was worse than this is strawberry cough syrup. And to make matters worse, this same strawberry concoction is mixed into the drink as well.
The first sip of the frappe was decent. It brought about hints of coffee and a nice taste of mocha and chocolate from the chocolate chips. But after about another sip or two, the strawberry flavor really begins to overshadow the rest of the drink. This wouldn’t be a bad thing if McDonald’s picked an actual palatable strawberry syrup.
The chocolate chips and mocha base were the only things saving the day here. Underneath the artificial strawberry, a hint of these ingredients could be tasted. The chocolate chips required a slight amount of chewing, but for the most part they made it up the straw alright. Unfortunately, there was almost no coffee flavor in this drink past the first sip. It almost made me question whether I purchased a milkshake or a frozen coffee drink.
Overall I can’t recommend spending upwards of $3 on this drink. It wasn’t bad enough to reach the “undrinkable” levels of bad, but it wasn’t highly enjoyable.
Pros: Pretty to look at, chocolate chips
Cons: Extremely artificial tasting strawberry, virtually no coffee flavor, the taste does not justify the high amount of calories and sugar
