It seems like not too long ago that KFC released their freakish Boneless Chicken along with that annoying “I ate the bones” ad campaign. KFC is at it again releasing another type of Boneless chicken, although this time in the less scary form of Chicken Bites, which are chicken breast nuggets. The KFC Hot Shot Bites feature a signature KFC blend of herbs and spices with a kick of cayenne pepper. I picked up a standalone order of six Hot Shot Bites for $3.59. A 6 piece combo, featuring a side and a drink can be purchased for only a slightly higher fee of $3.99.
How Does It Taste?
I went in to KFC with low expectations for the Hot Shot Bites. Their latest Boneless Chicken was a bit of a disappointment, and I am not crazy about KFC chicken in general. However, the Hot Shot Bites left me pleasantly surprised.
The Hot Shot Bites come in a small box and are about the size of a golfball. The size and low quantity of chicken that you get in the meal make the $3.99 price tag feel a bit steep.
When first gazing upon the KFC Hot Shot Bites, they looked like they would be extremely crispy and contain only a small amount of chicken, but it turns out the exact opposite was true. The breading on the Hot Shot Bites was light and provided a delicious spicy flavor. The chicken breast meat on the inside was tender and juicy. The meat was easily pulled apart and left me satisfied, as I was expecting something more along the lines of KFC’s white meat Boneless Chicken, which was dry and flavorless.
The Hot Shot Bites didn’t disappoint when it came to the spicy factor. They are definitely the spiciest thing I’ve had from KFC, and probably most fast food restaurants. They weren’t unbearably spicy, but they did wake up my tongue to a nice bit of heat. I’d probably put them slightly above McDonald’s Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder in terms of level of heat.
KFC’s Hot Shot Bites are fairly small, bite-sized pieces of white meat chicken breast. The thing that separates Hot Shot Bites from regular KFC Bites is a spicy coating. The Hot Shot Bites appeared to be crispy, but the breading was extremely light. The meat inside of the Hot Shot Bites was tender and juicy. The spiciness level didn’t disappoint as most quick serve restaurant foods with the “spicy” label. If you don’t like spicy foods or have a low spice tolerance then I don’t suggest ordering these. The new Hot Shot Bites gets two thumbs up from me.
Pros: Actually spicy, chicken is soft and tender, outer coating isn’t too crispy
Cons: Feels pretty expensive for only six small pieces of chicken
