Review: Jack in the Box Loaded Chili Cheese Wedges

As part of Jack in the Box’s latest promotion, the chain is now serving up Loaded Chili Cheese Wedges. They start with Jack’s potato wedges and top them with seasoned beef chili, melted cheddar cheese sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, onions, and jalapenos. I purchased the new chili cheese wedges for $2.99.

How Does It Taste?

Lately, it seems like Jack in the Box always has new dressed up fries on the menu. There was the Chili Cheese Curly Fries from last year, and more recently the Hot Mess Wedges. Now continuing that tradition is the Loaded Chili Cheese Wedges.

I like the chili that Jack in the Box uses on their fries. It’s not the kind of chili I’d ever eat in a bowl, but it tastes really good poured over potatoes. The chili has a slight seasoned taste to it and the consistency is neither too runny nor too thick, which is perfect for covering their fries.

The main part of this dish, the potato wedges, were the definitive drawback to this entire dish. The potatoes were incredibly starchy, not soft and fluffy like they should have been. They had the texture and taste of french fries reheated in a microwave. The only thing the potato wedges were good for here was transporting the rest of the ingredients.

The cheddar cheese sauce, cheddar cheese, and onions went incredibly well with the chili. They skimped a bit on the onions, but I can’t complain much since they really loaded up on the chili and cheddar cheeses. With all these ingredients on the wedges, you’d think that the coverage would have been ample, but the ingredients were concentrated at the center of the dish.

A bit of mixing always helps

One of my favorite toppings ever, jalapeno slices, actually took away from the Loaded Chili Cheese Wedges. Normally I would advocate throwing them on just about anything edible, but here they were so vinegary that they really clashed with the rest of the dish. I did, however, appreciate the slight amount of heat they provided.

Jack in the Box’s Loaded Chili Cheese Wedges had the right ingredients for a tasty experience, but it wasn’t well executed. The potato wedges were incredibly starchy and only acted as a vehicle for the rest of the toppings. The chili, cheese sauce, cheese, and onions all went very well together, but it was the addition of the jalapenos that brought the overall flavor down due to their vinegary taste. If the potatoes were softer then the score on this one would have been at least 1 point higher.

The Score

Taste: 6.5/10
Presentation: 5/10

Pros: The chili/cheese/onion combo was pretty tasty, spiciness thanks to the jalapenos
Cons: The potato wedges were very starchy, jalapenos tasted a bit out of place, coverage of ingredients could have been better, feels overpriced for what you get
