Jack in the Box recently made their menu more radical by adding several 80’s inspired items. These include: The Hot Mess Burger, Hot Mess Wedges, and the Hot Cinnamon Shake. The Jack in the Box Hot Cinnamon Shake is made by mixing a spicy cinnamon syrup into Jack in the Box vanilla ice cream. The shake is garnished with whipped cream topping and a maraschino cherry. The shake is available in regular and large sizes. I picked up a regular size Hot Cinnamon Shake for $2.99.
How Does it Taste?
The Hot Cinnamon Shake is perhaps the only spicy milkshake I’ve ever had. This thing has a strong cinnamon taste that lies somewhere between Red Hots and eating a spoonful of cinnamon, which isn’t recommended by the way. The strange thing is though, even under all of the cinnamon flavor, the flavor of the vanilla ice cream still comes through. It might sound like a bad thing that the cinnamon flavor is so strong, but it actually mixes very nicely with the ice cream. The sweetness of the shake is about perfect. The quickest way fast food places ruin a milkshake is by adding too much syrup, but the ratio of ice cream to syrup was spot on.
After a few sips of the Hot Cinnamon Shake the spiciness became noticeable. It’s an interesting kind of spicy, because it doesn’t burn on the tongue, but it burns in the back of the throat. After taking a sip of this milkshake, it feels like a cloud of spicy cinnamon forms momentarily and then slowly dissipates. It’s more of a chemical burn than the spicy feeling induced by capsaicin (the chemical responsible for making peppers hot and grown men cry). But do not worry, because even if you don’t like spicy foods you should be able to enjoy this milkshake.
The Jack in the Box Hot Cinnamon Shake is the most interesting flavor of milkshake I’ve ever had. The spiciness was a fun and unexpected twist. Even if you don’t enjoy spicy foods, you should be able to enjoy this shake as it has a different kind of burn to it. On top of the flavor of the shake, I’m in love with the bright red color of the shake. I’d recommend trying this shake before it’s gone.
Pros: Liquid cinnamon with a hint of vanilla, unexpected spiciness, awesome red color
Cons: Spicy burn might not be for everyone, 2g trans fat
