Review: IHOP Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle

IHOP is currently running a special featuring new Sweet Cream Topped Waffles. Of the three offerings, the Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle caught my attention the most since I love the combination of chocolate and cherries. For $6.99 I purchased a Ham and Eggs Combo which came with two eggs, a slice of ham, hash browns, and half of a Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle.

How Does It Taste?

IHOP Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle

I normally don’t eat things like pancakes or waffles in the morning, but IHOP’s Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle looked too good to pass up. Not being able to sacrifice a full meal for a full-sized waffle, I ordered the breakfast combo with a half-sized belgian waffle.

The Belgian waffle itself was firm but soft and bready on the inside, how a waffle should be. The waffle was topped with everything as advertised, but there wasn’t a lot of sweet cream or cherries on my waffle, there was plenty of chocolate sauce though. For fans of chocolate in or on their waffles, the Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle should satisfy.

I loved the sweet cream that they topped the waffle with. The sweet cream was very rich and had just the right amount of sweetness. IHOP should consider using the sweet cream in future dishes, because I’m now a fan of it. I wish there was more on the waffle so it could have been evenly spread, but coverage was secluded to the small portion it was added to. The holes in the waffle made it very difficult to spread onto the rest of the waffle.

The cherries were good, but they felt a bit out of place with the rest of the ingredients. The chocolate and sweet cream went well with the waffles, but the cherries seemed like more of an afterthought here. The slight tartness of the cherries seemed to clash a bit with the rest of the waffle. On top of this, I think I was given a total of six cherries for the entire waffle.

While I probably wouldn’t order this again, simply because I don’t eat waffles that often, it was still pretty tasty. As one can expect, it was more like dessert than breakfast. Even though the cherries stood out a bit much, I still enjoyed the dish as a whole.

Overview

IHOP’s Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle is a waffle topped with chocolate sauce, sweet cream, a few cherries, and a bit of powdered sugar. The waffle itself was very good and held up well under the ingredients. The chocolate sauce was great, and the sweet cream was rich with just the right amount of sweetness. The cherries were good by themselves but stuck out when combined with the rest of the flavors. I was given about six cherries total and they felt like more of an afterthought than anything. I recommend giving the Cherries and Cream Belgian Waffle a try.

The Score

Taste: 7.5/10
Presentation: 8/10

What I liked: Sweet cream, plenty of chocolate sauce, the Belgian waffle itself was nice
What I didn’t like: The cherries didn’t work out how I hoped they would, barely any cherries on my Belgian waffle, not enough sweet cream
