Carl’s Jr and Hardee’s are adding a new sandwich to their successful lineup of Turkey burgers, the Turkey Jalapeno Burger. This sandwich consists of a charbroiled turkey burger, pepper jack cheese, jalapeno slices, red onions, tomato, lettuce, and a “Santa Fe sauce”, all on a wheat bun. I picked up one of the new Jalapeno Turkey Burgers for the price of $3.59.
How Does it Taste?
I’ve tried the Turkey Burger in the past, and I thought it was a wonderful addition to the Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s menu. The turkey burger contains fewer calories and has a much lower fat content than beef patties. The patty they use for their turkey burgers are, unsurprisingly, tougher than a ground beef patty. They are slightly rubbery, but they have a good flavor. Even though the texture is different, the turkey burger still satisfies like a beef burger.
The Jalapeno Turkey Burger was quite zesty. The Santa Fe sauce, jalapenos, and pepper jack cheese dominate the other flavors. Carl’s Jr. liberally applied jalapenos to my Jalapeno Turkey Burger. The jalapenos provided the perfect amount of spiciness for me. For reasons unknown to me, many sandwiches from fast food joints that have jalapenos on them are not spicy by any definition of the word. Luckily that wasn’t the case here, it was spicy without being over the top. It might be too much for the typical American palette, you know, the kind that think Flamin’ Hot Cheetos are spicy. But if you didn’t like spicy why are you ordering a Jalapeno Burger anyways?
The onions – I usually pick them off of my burgers from Carl’s Jr. because they are too strong and end up ruining the sandwich for me. In an attempt to keep my reviews unbiased, I ate the sandwich how its creators intended. Since the jalapenos, sauce, and pepper jack cheese all stood out fairly well, the onions didn’t take over like I thought they would.
I have to say that the Santa Fe sauce they put on this burger is really freakin’ good. It was smokey, tangy, zesty, and a little bit spicy. It tasted like it had a bit of lime in it too. Carl’s Jr’s burgers are usually pretty messy and this one was no different. For every bit of sauce that dripped out of my sandwich, a tear was shed. It was that good.
Overview
The original turkey burger from Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s is good, but they made it even better with the Turkey Jalapeno Burger. It has the perfect amount of spice, not too much or too little. The turkey can be tasted even under all of the strong flavors this sandwich has going on. The sauce is out of this world. They put too many onions on it for me, but they can always be picked off. I highly recommend the Jalapeno Turkey Burger!
The Score
Taste: 8.5/10
Presentation: 6/10
Pros: Actually contains some spice, Santa Fe sauce, better for you than beef.
Cons: Messy, too many onions, might be too spicy for crybabies.
