Review: Carl’s Jr. Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger

Carl’s Jr.’s latest addition to their menu is a Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger. I ordered a Six Dollar version which comes with the Six Dollar beef patty, Swiss cheese, Franks Red Hot hot sauce, blue cheese crumbles, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. I purchased a Six Dollar Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger for $4.89 (wait a minute, that isn’t six dollars!).

How Does It Taste?

I’ve noticed a trend at Carl’s Jr. recently – All of their burgers are so damn messy. The new Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger is no exception. I got Franks Red Hot sauce all over me before I even took a single bite. Messy burgers aren’t always a bad thing. In fact, if a burger is messy it must be doing something right, but Carl’s Jr. is the master of messy fast food burgers.

Carl's Jr. Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger

The Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger is the first burger I’ve ever had with blue cheese on it. I rarely eat blue cheese as it has a very strong flavor and is only useful in a handful of situations. I get why Carl’s Jr. put it on the burger to go with the overall “buffalo” theme, but I found it pretty strange anyways.

I thought I wasn’t going to like the blue cheese but it actually lent a nice richness to the burger. Some bites contained too much blue cheese, however, and ended up being dominated by the flavor of the innocent little crumbles. Overall the blue cheese worked out pretty well, and Franks Red Hot was the perfect complement.

Speaking of Franks Red Hot, this thing is about as loaded with it as physically possible. The top bun as well as the bottom bun were completely slathered with it. You’d think that amount of buffalo sauce would be overpowering, but it actually turned out to be just enough to get some of the flavor of Franks Red Hot in every bite. There’s no denying the combination of Franks Red Hot and blue cheese conjures up that familiar “buffalo” flavor, but I can’t help but think this combination would have worked better on a chicken sandwich. That’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable on a burger, though.

The produce was pretty lackluster as usual. The tomatoes were passing, but the lettuce – my lord there was too much of it and what was there was thick and crunchy. It was a challenge just holding this thing together enough to fit my mouth over it for a bite, and I’ve been told by more than a few people that I have a pretty big mouth. I also pulled the incredibly strong red onions off to make the burger edible.

Overall the Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger is a winner. I had some qualms with the produce, and at times the blue cheese flavor was quite concentrated, but the burger definitely has a good flavor going on. People that don’t like buffalo sauce or blue cheese, the two dominating flavors, obviously aren’t going to like this burger, but it’s worth a try for all the other Carl’s Jr. fans out there.

Overview

Carl’s Jr.’s Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger is one of the most exotic fast food burgers I’ve tried in a while. The combination of Franks Red Hot and blue cheese makes for a winning flavor combination, and one that works surprisingly well with a burger. I thought it might have worked better with a chicken sandwich, though. I wasn’t a fan of the produce, so that definitely detracted from the overall burger, but as a whole it was pretty tasty.
