Review: Burger King Chipotle Whopper

Burger King has unleashed a huge selection of new items for their spring menu. I took a look at all of the items in a previous article. Among the new items is the Chipotle Whopper. The Chipotle Whopper takes your standard whopper patty and buns, and adds lettuce, tomato, bacon, caramelized onions, pepper jack cheese, and a chipotle mayo. I picked up a Chipotle Whopper from my local Burger King for $4.79.

How Does it Taste?

My oh my how I loved this sandwich. The Chipotle Whopper turned out much better than I thought it would. It takes all of the good things about the Burger King Whopper and somehow makes it better. The vegetables on my Whopper weren’t the freshest on this particular visit, but the lettuce provided a nice crunch and there wasn’t too much of it like on a typical Whopper.

I was interested to find that the Chipotle Whopper contains caramelized onions. They were small and stringy and looked pretty good, but they were very mild in flavor. I realize caramelized onions have a particularly mild flavor to them anyways, but the McDonald’s Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger pulled off the onions much better than the Chipotle Whopper. That’s not to say they didn’t add anything to the sandwich, because they did. The onions provided a mild onion flavor and an interesting texture to the Chipotle Whopper.

The pepper jack cheese went somewhat unnoticed, but I blame the chipotle mayo for masking the flavors of the cheese. The cheese was slightly melted and not goopy. I’m sure that a small part of the spiciness of this sandwich could be attributed to the pepper jack cheese.

The bacon and chipotle mayo really made the Chipotle Whopper delicious. The bacon was adequately crispy and full of bacony goodness. I’ve had some flimsy bacon from fast food restaurants, but Burger King’s bacon usually turns out pretty nice.

The chipotle mayo should be on every whopper sandwich in place of the standard mayonnaise. It was smokey and zesty, like a good chipotle sauce should be, but it also had a bit of heat to it which many chipotle sauces fail to deliver (Subway). This was the last component needed to seal my love for the Chipotle Whopper.

Burger King’s Chipotle Whopper is the best whopper to come out of BK in a long time. January’s Avocado and Swiss Whopper was a nice sandwich, but the Chipotle Whopper is much bolder and more up the Whopper’s alley. The chipotle mayo is the star of the show here and adds a smokey and slightly spicy flavor throughout. The onions needed a bit of work, but I still feel like they added more depth to the Whopper. If I was to try this whopper again, I’d probably ask Burger King to throw on some jalapenos. I highly recommend this burger to fans of the Whopper.

The Score

Taste: 9/10
Presentation: 7/10

Pros: Chipotle mayo, crispy bacon, best Whopper variation in a long time
Cons: Caramelized onions were pretty weak, a bit messy to eat
