Review: Burger King Bacon Gouda Muffin Sandwich

Burger King Bacon Gouda MuffinBurger King has already released a large amount of new items this year (at least 5 off the top of my head), and this month they’ve expanded their menu even further with the addition of the Bacon Gouda Muffin, Bacon Gouda Biscuit, and a new line of Seattle’s Best coffee. The Bacon Gouda Sandwich features fluffy eggs, bacon (or your choice of meat), an herb spread, and a slice of Gouda cheese. I purchased a Bacon Gouda Muffin for $2.49.

How Does it Taste?

The Burger King Bacon Gouda Muffin is one of the more interesting fast food breakfast creations I’ve seen lately. It’s not everyday that you see a fast food item featuring Gouda cheese and an herb spread. I have to give Burger King some innovation points on that, this was pretty unexpected.

The Bacon Gouda Muffin was pretty much delicious. This sandwich was definitely a cut above their usual breakfast offerings. The scrambled egg on this sandwich was light and fluffy, and it was steaming hot (just cooked). There was also no shortage of scrambled eggs – they made up the bulk of this sandwich.

The bacon, while there were only 2 modest sized strips of it on the sandwich, was still a dominant feature of the Bacon Gouda Muffin. Some people prefer a lot of bacon, but I think there was just enough on this sandwich.

The slice of Gouda cheese was a prominent feature of this sandwich. The Gouda by itself has a strong, smokey cheese flavor to it, but on the sandwich it adds the perfect compliment of Gouda to every bite. I was worried that Burger King would wuss out on this aspect of the sandwich, but they really nailed it.

The other part of this sandwich that captivated me was the herb spread they applied to both sides of the muffin. This spread was buttery and had a slight garlic flavor to it. Combined with the Gouda cheese, it provided a flavor you currently can’t find at any other fast food restaurant. I simply loved it.

Overview

The Burger King Bacon Gouda Muffin is the best breakfast sandwich I’ve had in a long time. The Gouda cheese and herb spread made for a tasty combination, there were plenty of scrambled eggs on this baby, and it was pretty filling. I normally prefer McDonald’s over Burger King for breakfast, but this sandwich will bring me to Burger King more often in the a.m. now. The Bacon Gouda Muffin gets my recommendation.

Taste: 9.5/10
Presentation: 9/10

Pros: Gouda cheese was a tasty addition, buttery herb spread added a new dimension of flavor, filling, but not terrible nutrition-wise.
Cons: Only 2 pieces of bacon.

  1. I don’t know where this review was done, but the BK I went to did not have a Gouda sandwich quite like the one featured here.
    It was barely warm. The muffin was dry and tasted like it was just pulled from the bag.
    The top half of the muffin did not have the alleged tasty herb spread. I could actually see the dollop of the spread in the center of the muffin.
    The 2 sad pieces of bacon were soggy, and most definitely not thick cut or even slightly smoked.
    The eggs… Hmmm. Were there eggs on mine? Oh, there was about a tablespoon of eggs.
    The cheese tasted and looked like it was just pulled from the fridge and slapped on top of the bacon.

    I was quite disappointed. I won’t swear off their sandwich just yet, but I won’t order it again until someone else locally tells me where the good ones are.

  2. I am by no means a conventional breakfast food person. The BK Gouda sandwich was absolutely fabulous and you would seriously think you were eating a meal from a fine restaurant instead of fast food . It’s simply THAT good ! The croissant and eggs were both light, the Gouda was perfectly melted and the herb/butter blend was heaven . The only problem ? I don’t have a BK near me….

  3. I LOVE this bacon gouda sandwich! I am not a big fast food consumer, but in my opinion, this was the best breakfast sandwich out of all the chains. Sadly, yesterday morning I stopped at BK to treat myself to one and was told they’ve been discontinued. What a shame!

    • That makes me very sad, since this was one of the best breakfast sandwiches (not just fast food) I’ve eaten. :(
